A Journal of My Life – Prof. KK George
Prof KK George hails from Vengoor, the northernmost village of the former princely state of Travancore. He had his primary and secondary education in local schools and completed higher education in Union Christian College, Aluva and Madras Christian College, Chennai. After a brief stint of teaching in a college in Kerala he joined the State Bank of India as a Probationary officer. He served the bank for fourteen years, with a long innings in its Economic and Statistical Research Department. George resigned from the bank to return to academics and joined the Cochin University of Science and Technology, from where he retired as the Director of School of Management Studies. A specialist in Public Finance, his PhD was on centre-state financial flows and inter-state disparities in development in India. He has authored three books and several journal articles in the area of public finance. His well-acclaimed monograph ‘Limits to Kerala Model of Development’ sounded the first note of caution on the fiscal sustainability of Kerala’s human development. George was a member of several committees set up by the state and central government. He was awarded Senior Fulbright Fellowship and the Shastri Indo-Canadian Fellowship and visited the United States, Canada and many Asian, European, and African countries. Married to Shirly, Prof George lives in Aluva on the banks of river Periyar from where he started his long journey in life. He lives there with his children and grandchildren. He is the Chairman of Centre for Socio-economic and Environmental Studies (CSES), an institution that he mentored to develop as a leading institution for empirical research in social sciences.
